The only time we need an effective government is during war. In peace time, it's best that they fight with each other.

Len,

Six years ago the economy was being stifled by a massive budget deficit. The malaise caused by this deficit had far reaching impact on the economy. It was believed to be an intractable problem which could not be resolved in this millenium.

I for one am extremely grateful for the successful efforts made by the President and Congress to correct this problem.

I am just curious, but which law on the books right now is stopping you from doing what you like?

Thanks

Thread,

From Bernie Schaeffer's website:

"In the latest round of antitrust absurdity, the Justice Department has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Visa USA and Mastercard International, claiming that these two card behemoths restrain competition and limit customer choice. The suit charges that both cards are controlled by the same set of banks, and that member banks exclude the issuance of other cards like American Express and Discover. Mastercard and Visa currently account for 75% of the nation's credit-card sales. Are we missing something here? Doesn't every American man, woman, and child receive between three and five credit card-offers in the mail each week? How much more competition do we need? These days, it appears that the competition has reached a cut-throat level with low rates and no fees. On top of that, American Express, the primary whiner about being shut out of the credit-card business, charges a higher discount fee to merchants, which ultimately raises the prices of goods and services. Let's see if we can get this straight. Americans are losing out now because of limited choice, so let's change the rules so that other cards that charge higher fees and merchant discount rates can get a bigger market share. Sounds great, doesn't it? Why can't the government channel its efforts into something that will really benefit the American people … like digging up more dirt in the Lewinsky affair?

Len,

"effective government"

That's an oxymoron if ever I heard one!
