Given the fact that PT Discount went belly up the other day, I've got to ask: how financially secure is Datek? I've got a lot of money tied up in this baby...

Comments on how well Datek handles Roth IRAs (3d try)?

I've had much better experiences with Datek than with Waterhouse, and am considering moving our IRAs here also. I'd heard that they'd had some problems earlier in the year. Can anyone speak to whether these have been more or less resolved? How pleased have you been with your Roth IRA handling at Datek?

TIA,

Dave

Specifying shares for tax purposes possible at Datek?

I've heard conflicting info about what is necessary to specify shares sold for tax purposes. I recall having read that indicating which shares were sold in one's personal finance program was sufficient. (This is how I've been specifying shares for the past 2 years, with no challenge from uncle sam so far. Then again, my account is not very large.)

OTOH, the the helpful and plausible writeup at fairmark.com indicates that the brokerage must send a confirmation indicating which shares were sold. Questions:

--Anyone have an authoritative answer on which account is right? Perhaps there's an IRS URL that would definitively resolve this.

--If getting brokerage cooperation is necessary, can/will datek do this without enormous hassle?

TIA,

Dave
