Ken,

I've had interesting problems with Waterhouse. One of the most troubling is waiting five minutes while a short is "pending" broker review, then, as it becomes an open order, the order status screen goes down, and the fill info is unavailable. Nothing like putting on a "minute" trade in a fast market, then flying blind for 15 minutes. These days, that can easily mean 100 Dow points. And yes, I have entered orders above the ask that have not been filled. Not much more frustrating than putting in an overly generous bid, watching it trade at that price for minutes, on a high volume issue, and not being filled.

Two things I will say in their favor, I've never had a problem borrowing ANY shares for short selling, and every cancel I've ever issued went through. But the online system can be dangerous, at the worst of times. And though I know there are probably better brokers, this is still a huge improvement over waiting on hold for 20 minutes only to have a 20 year old salesman waste our time questioning our trades...

<Mike, same bitch with the same broker. Yesterday AND today I entered <limit put orders ABOVE the ask price that did not get filled. Both <orders would have been big pops if Waterhouse could have got <execution. I called tonight and all they could say was they would <look into it. Is this a problem with this broker? I have never had <this problem with my other account that I trade out of. Regards, Ken.

ken.

when you saw a print
above your limit, at the ask,
( i am assuming it was passed )
it is my understanding that this would have necessitated, as a prerequisite, that your order be filled...russell, gersh, countless
others would know the actual rules, i am sure,
but this is one type of trading with which i am rather familiar.

their explanation is inadequate.

Ken, if the option you were trying to buy was on the RAES system,
and you were trying to buy 10 or less, (they may have very recently
raised the quantity to 20), you should have been filled instantly at the screen offer.

Otherwise, they send the order to the floor. Most brokers will not
guarantee a fill until five minutes have elapsed from placing the
order when the order goes to the floor. By then the market
may have changed.
