Predictions within 1998:

Today was not the bottom for CPQ.

CPQ Bottom -- 17 1/8

NASDAQ bottom -- 1150

Current position: 100% cash, since 6 months ago.

Sentiment: Bearish, until IMF/Russia/Asia/Clinton situation gets substantially better.

1999 could be worse if world economy gets driven into a recession/depression.

jimbo -
I say - not the bottom, still too much air in the tech balloon. But CPQ should hold up better than Dell, CSCO, the net fliers, who could lose 5-10% per day for another week. I think it will remain ugly. If I have the energy I will daytrade down on anything that goes red (at least as long as I keep hitting the ball). If I had any sense I would put aside some cash, or do some option plays to limit my risk, but I'm having more fun this way. So CPQ about 20, Dell and CSCO in the 30's, the net warriors down 30 or 40%. Then the clouds blow away, the sun comes out, and all the balloons go back up...

Hope that's not too gloomy, I think this is a good time to have some dry powder.

Spend a lot of time at Best Buy looking for software. Noticed a lot of cpq's going out the door on their way to high school and college. Went to radio shack to scope out presario 450 and asked how cpq sales were. The ladies response was ok but not outstanding but was looking for a BIG holiday season and that radio shack was training there people to answer any question a customer might have. I asked about the cpq printer because I didn't see any on the floor. She said they were in the back, couldn't keep them in stock and was trying to hold until big Christmas promotion to mate with computer as a matched set.

Since you asked......23 7/l6 for a bottom. Greenspan cuts rates .50, compaq surprises up and we sit at 30 5/8 by 9:45 next Wed.

H.... I just wrote an e-mail to CNBC and told them that they are behind the curve on the demand for round-the-clock stock market information and that they need a one hour show called "Midnite Market Monitor" that will update everyone on what happened today and what's on tap for tomorrow and that they need to PERMANENTLY display the S&P bug in the lower right of the screen, instead of every 30 minutes which is what they are currently doing. Infomercials and reruns of Hard Ball don't get it! El

If not today, HOW MUCH LOWER ?? Today was not the bottom. Hang on for the ride. The roller coaster is in free fall. No trader is going to let his money set in the market this week end. A lot of individuals that don't trade are going to get out. MM are going to continue selling into any rallies. That is my sense of the situation. It will be a good day for long term bottom feeders that are in presently in cash.

CPQ bottom-- Depends on earnings and market could go to teens if they disappoint and market continues down. Could be back to 30 with good earnings, good CC, and some market recovery.

NASDAQ bottom-- I have spent the evening reading investment news. None of it looks good. We have not seen the bottom. I have no idea about NASDAQ. Some analyst are saying 6500 DOW if we don't stop at 7400. Even Abbey Cohen has turned away from the market today.
