Christine, just a few brief comments. (I have spent my entire Saturday posting to SI! What a disgrace!)

1) I would guess that what we are dealing with now is not "the normal rhythms of financial markets," but a very abnormal, atypical world-wide financial crisis. (But then, I am not an economist. And I gather, neither are you.)

2) Egypt may be a "restrictive culture" for the women, but it sure isn't restrictive for the guys!
