Have you asked Schwab the reason why they do not allow the selling of covered calls and the buying of puts on the same equity? It may have to do with the creation of an options spread which requires margin and retirement accounts cannot have margin status.

Dr. Z, I am using Brown & Co. for my IRA. Schwab sounds like they haven't taken their Prozac, as that rule makes no sense whatsoever.
Brown's only limitation is that you can not be long more than 25 pct. of the value of your IRA in options.
