Warnings of oil price slumps
Tue, 13 Oct 1998

A leading oil and gas executive has warned that world oil prices could slump to new record lows.

Woodside Petroleum managing director John Akehurst told the Asia Pacific oil and gas conference in Perth that oil dropped to below $US12 a barrel earlier this year, its lowest level in 20 years.

Mr Akehurst said while the price had recovered slightly since then, oil could well drop even lower and over a significant period.

He said on balance, sentiment among investors was negative and boardrooms around the world were reappraising high cost opportunities.
