Has anyone considered that management may have its head up its butt far enough that they decided NOT to prewarn because of their fear as to what it would do to an already rapidly falling stock price?

All these "reasons" for pulling out of the Alex Brown Conf might sound good - but the fact of the matter they are "tipping the market" just by pulling out. At least that will be the perception.

The WILL have to blow away consensus EPS on the 20th to just begin to bring the stock price back. If they only just make earnings it will not be enough to keep the stock from falling further. It will be too little too late.

So, I did the only prudent thing one can do in this situation: I shorted PSFT today at 18 3/4. I think we will see 15 this week.

Of course, this is only IMHO - if I am wrong, I will lose a bunch of money :-(

Good luck to all,

Prof

Is this relevant to the "backing out" from the Alex Brown conf...

By coincidence, Bloomberg's monthly magazine was just now delivered to me and it contains an interview with PSFT CFO Ron Codd.

Excerpts:

"Rather than whisper guidance to an analyst or two or having sign-language conversations with investors about where we're going, we just come out and put it [a forecast of our business] in print. I think that's the most effective way to ensure full, fair and broadly effective disclosure of the the information investors are looking for.
...
...because I've chosen to use a press release for our projections, I could not possibly be skewered for selective disclosure, whereas a company that provides guidance on a conference call is going to have a more and more difficult time supporting the notion that (it) did not selectively disclose."

Well, good on you, Ron Cobb. Three cheers for an ethical PSFT.

Full, fair and broad disclosure. A fair playing field. Yes!

Too late for the the selective notification PSFT gave about the recent conference call, but let's hope that's all in the past.

So. Could this be one reason for the backing out?
