Much of the 29 crash is attributed to the fact that there was a 10 percent margin requirement at that time. When the fed started to tighten, the market imploded and the margin calls started feeding on themselves.

As far as starting a hedge fund, I think you would need at least $10,000, in equity to get a couple of million from the brokerage houses to start. I'm not sure that I want to put up that kind of money.
