We got Bill Clinton in the White House not because of the media, but because Pats Robertson and Buchanan terrified mainstream Republicans and liberal Independents into the Democratic camp. Face the facts.

Yes indeedy.

And you are correct, bp, Im proud.

It's the economy, stupid. When the economy is perceived to be doing poorly, the President is thrown out.

Clinton - 1992 (Bush out)
Reagan - 1980 (Carter out)
Carter - 1976 (Ford out)

When the economy is perceived as doing well, the President gets re-elected.

Nixon - 1972
Reagan - 1984
Bush - 1988
Clinton - 1996

Typically, the US economy runs into recessions around the turn of the decade.

For the 1992 election, one could also argue about the impact of Ross Perot. There were two candidates beating up on Bush in the media.

As for 1996, Bob Dole had little to differentiate himself from Clinton in the way of fiscal conservatism. They were both tax-and-spend politicians. He also had the question of age.
