Paul Engel, re:<Celeron outships K6>
That's a real eye-popper.
If Celeron and K6 accounted for 8 Million X86 CPU's in Q3, total X86's must have far exceeded the IDC forecast.
Considering CeleronA didn't start shipping till mid August, the 4 Million units is very impressive. Do you think Celeron will be even greater unit volume in Q4?
And considering Intel maintained it's ASP in the quarter, (and Intel indicated Xeon's weren't a large factor in Q3, nor was PPro), is it fair to assume that PII also greatly exceeded expectations?
I think Intel alone must have shipped at least 20 Million CPU's in the quarter. (Figure 75% revenue in CPU's at $250 ASP).
Look's like the PC market is a lot healthier than IDC forecasts.
Glad to be wrong on this one. ;-)

Woodbutcher,
RE:" Q2 Celeron shipments were about 1 million units as I recall.

That makes 4 x 1 million = 4 Million Celerons in Q3.

Thus, Celeron units ALONE were greater than the 3.8 million
TOTAL CPUs shipped by AMD."

If true, that's a very stunning accomplishment.
As you know I was a big detractor of the "Celeron" but also A BIG FAN of the Celeron A, Intels best work ever, IMHO. So why do you think I'd be shocked that Intel had sold a lot of them?
You'll also remember that I figured out what they would do with the Dixon long before you did...

Regards, Jim

PS...Intel beats estimates by .09 and the stock is flat. Things are looking up since last week when AMD beat estimates by .15 and got trashed. <G>
