Yes, they use IP to transport voice and call management information on the LAN, and since it replaces the PBX functionality for the phones that it services (their own proprietary phones, BTW), they call it a PBX, or an IP PBX. They could have as easily called it a voice server or invented a new term, and saved us some confusion, IMO.

I wouldn't generalize about _all_ IP-based " PBX" capabilities, but for this one it seems that the answer would be " yes, there is a significant difference" at this time. I say that because of the same reasons I gave in the preceding post: They are only using IP transport to traverse the LAN. When it hits the larger legacy PBX or the WAN, it goes out as ISDN PRI to carry analog voice, without compression, and in a circuit-switched mode.

They are not using routing on the WAN, in other words, instead they're using legacy switching techniques to go out onto the PSTN, from what I have been able to discern of their products, thus far. But again, I'm quite certain that they will do something to correct this shortcoming *?* soon, especially if they are being acquired by CSCO. Comments and corrections are welcome.
