To All: S&P Analyst Comments on VLSI

S&P analyst Brendan McGovern continues to rank VLSI Technology (VLSI) Hold, after the company reported Q3 operating EPS of $0.03 vs. $0.42, a bit better than expected following a pre-announced shortfall. McGovern expects under-utilization of capacity to continue to hamper margins. He cut his $0.24 1998 EPS estimate to $0.17, and his 1999 forecast from $0.80 to $0.45. At 0.6 times book value and sales, He calls the stock "statistically cheap", but with the recent departure of both the COO and CFO, McGovern thinks investors will remain cautious on the shares in the near term.

Thoughts From a Trader Who Has Followed VLSI since 1990

I expect that VLSI will languish around the current level through year end. There may be a pop up in early November after some institutions are finished with fiscal 10/30 year end tax selling. I think the stock will be under pressure through year end due to individuals selling for tax reasons and just "throwing in the towel". Based on my experience, VLSI could have one hell uva January through April move up, based on relief from selling pressure and much better prospects for 2H99. So it looks frustrating until then unless you trade, which I plan to do until 12/30. Best wishes to all on this one.

Dan,

VLSI announced the first CDMA design wins I believe way back in January, and have continued to talk about them, including yesterday. The real question is what quarter will CDMA begin to impact revenues and earnings...
