Why were the analysts so far off? Ballard told the world that the loss would be "several million" which is an accurate description of (0.56). Why did they think anything from (0.14) to 0.02? I thought maybe he'd given them guidance he hadn't given the rest of us, but now it looks like they were simply unwilling to believe him. One of my main complaints about 3Dfx has been that they aren't communicating well with analysts. (Two 100% surprises back to back.) Now I'm not sure if it's 3Dfx's fault or that the analysts with wax in their ears. As bad as the loss is I'm happy to know that Ballard was being straightforward (if vague) about how bad it would be.
