Why were the analysts so far off?
Very good question. Ballard was as plain as he could be. He said "several million" which is not "a couple" of million ($2-$3 million), nor is it a few million ($3-$5 million). Several million is at least seven million, but the term implies more than seven, or about eight million, which on 16 million shares is approximately $.50+.

I think that is the bad news. The good news is that Ballard cleaned out old inventory, so there won't be any drag on earnings from that corner going forward. Tomorrow's price will depend on what is said in the conference call and whether there is any announcement of oem's.

"Several" in my book and many people's means 3~5 and not 9. They should have used much stronger language in the pre-announcement. 3Dfx is willing to talk with investors and analysts a lot; They are simply not willing to communicate and tell a lot. If nVidia ever goes bankrupt, the single best investment they can make is replace Ballard with its CEO.

P.S. Sun Micro just missed the estimates big time. It should be interesting tomorrow.
