There is no doubt this was a blatant intervention by the Fed coordinated with 'Plunge Protection Team'. I guess their rational is to 'stabilize financial markets' - i.e. bail out their Wall Street buddies in deep doo-doo. It is an open question whether this kind of intervention would save the day or make the collapse worse. I just don't know. However I believe it is a bad idea to fight the Fed. And I am open to all views right now.
