First, what Gene said is not true. Intel netted slightly more 3Q98 than they did in 3Q97. From Intel's press release page:

"Net income in the third quarter was $1.6 billion, essentially flat
with the third quarter of 1997."


It was essentially flat. But if you look at the numbers it was slightly down, about 1% I think. One percent is essentially flat in my book.

Tony Viola, I think you missed my main point.
While income was down only a small amount in Q3'98, when normalized to Q3'97
we see a 5 ½ cent contribution to EPS based on lower 1998 tax rate
and fewer shares due to the 12 months of stock repurchases.
This is what a number of people are looking at when comparing the Quarters.
Just the messenger. ;-)
