Toy, either you or the PC week editors are naive.

In the business world, the everyday life just like fighting a war, the job functions of the sales and marketing people are to push more of their companies' products into the market so that they will win more of the market shares. So, there are winners and losers
in the market all the times, and it will never happen that everyone is winner or loser. So,
to some extend, every company is trying to drive its competitors out of business by
winning the market shares. MSFT is just one of such company, and it is nothing wrong with it in a free mrket economy, unless you want to back to the communist
economy, that everyone can survive, but no one is living well. So to drive your competitors out of business is what we call competition in the free market economy.
If you do not compete, then sooner or later you will be out of the market. If you fight to death to compete and win, someone will be driven out of the market by you.
However whether you win or lose in the competition is always the consumers' choice.
If you have a product with the best performance / price ratio, together with smart
markting strategy, then most likely you will win the competition and drive the competitors out of business.

As to innovation, it all depends on how you define it. To invent the microprocessor
is innovation, to put the CPU for different kinds of new applications is another kind of innovation. Toyota , GM, did not invent the car, but they build the best cars in the world. MSFT may not invent the spread sheet, but they develop the best spread sheet
software with the best performance / price ratio. So, innovation is one thing, put the products together and successfully push it into the market is another. To be a successful business man is not a crime. A inventor can not be a successful business man most of the time, and a successful business man will not necessary be an inventor. So, to
start up a company, you always need to put the inventor and the business man together to make the company successful.

Talking about MSFT's integration various application into its OS, I do not see anything wrong with it. Actually , by integration, it bring a lot of convenience to the consumers. Thinking about buying a car, you want to go to a vendor which cn offer you the total solution, you want to buy a car which you can drive home right away. You do not want to buy engine from one manufacturer, the tire from another, and the
aircondition from nother and ....etc. Especially if you are not a specialist in mechanics, it will bring you a lot of headaches as a consumer. It is the same thing for software, you want to buy a package which will offer you total solution, i.e a software package which will offer you all the application software you need, the spread sheet, the graphic software, the software tools...etc, so that you do not have to spend a lot of time to buy different application softwares seprately from different vendors and put them together, especially if you are not software specialist , which will bring you a lot of hedaches to evaluate different softwares seprately. Do not assume that everyone on the street is software specialist like you, actually 99% of the consumers are not. So, MSFT's success actually bring the boom of PC of today.
Think about that couple years ago, LOTUS sold it Lotus 123 for couple of hundred dollars, and this , and that for couple hundred of doollars. At that time, software is very very expensive. Not till Lotus is out of the pictures and MSFT succeeded, that we , as consumers , had softwares with a reasonable performance / price ratio. You probably still remember not long ago, SUN still sold its SUN3 for over $20k, not till
all the hardware vendors started to offer INTEL based workstation that SUN started to drop its price of hardwares. So we should all thank INTEL and MSFT to bring us, consumers, ino today's PC era. Now PC together with the software is so cheap that almost everyone in US can afford So, MSFT's success is really good for consumers.
SUN, ORCL, NSCP lost the competition because of their own mistake , now they act
just like a crying baby , crying to the DOJ for help. But they all forget years ago
when MSFT and INTC did not succeed as they are today, SUN, ORCL, NSCP tried to monopoly the market by over charging the consumers with their products.I do not think those companies are pro competition and think about the benefit of the consumers. Today, these companies failed because of their own mistake, greediness,
and they started to sing the song of pro competition, innovation, and benefit of consumers, but couple years ago when they monopoly the market , they never sang this song.

If DOJ wins this MSFT case, then our High Tech industry will end up with enormous troubles, and our civilization will be back to the 30s. AMD will suit LU for integrate the flash memory into its communication chips. IDTI will suit INTEL to integrate the SRAM into its micro processors. COMS will suit INTC for integrate the Modem capability into its CPU. MU will suit various chip companies of integrating the DRAM into their chips. TI will suit various chip companies of integrating the DSP
functions into their chips. INTEL will be suit by various companies by integrating the audio and video capabilities into it CPU ....etc. At that time , our high Tech industry will be destroyed completely, i.e the economy. I do not know how DOJ will handle those suits which will drive our economy to the drain.
