Sorry Dave, I went out for an extended lunch and just got back--since the Oct spread that I have on does not require any maintenance

If you are referring to my initiation of short puts that I mentioned to Brian -- no I will not initiate them today unless we have a sharp sell-off. As far as the length of time that I will hold them--I will hold them until such time that I get a sell signal on my system. In the meantime if the market rallies sufficiently after I establish the position, I'd then buy some puts at a lower strike so that I can just ride the short puts and wait for the premium to erode. Once I establish a position, if I have a protective offset in place, I normally hold it for several weeks and sometimes to expiration. At some point, I end up straddling it by writing calls--and holding the straddle for a while.

BTW, SI is real slow today--don't know if others are having this problem
