Looks like Birck and Nettles gave each other a huge black eye. This kind of petty bickering happens often in broken relationship.

Current scoreboard: Birck 1, Nettles 0.

But the game is not over yet. Let's see what Birck's plan is about fiber. You can never have too much fiber in your diet.

I have no doubt that TLAB has development projects that address its future needs. Few months ago when TLAB made an offer to CIEN, the logical reason IMO is TLAB had evaluated its own developments and came to the conclusion that it will be faster and better to incorporate CIEN technology than to proceed with its own R&D. Cheaper or not that is entirely debatable. TLAB's board of directors also bought into the idea which probably after extensive reviews by its own engineers. So in my analysis, CIEN's technology is very much ahead of TLAB's R&D. Now the deal was terminated due to other reasons and with the possibility of developing its own technology, Birck has no choice but to reaffirming investors that it has and able to continue with existing R&D. It is a logical business decision. If Birck ignores investor concerns about the future technology, he would effectively cast a death sentence on his own company, even a rooke would not do a thing like that. Birck has given me an idea of future growth in this arena by confirming next few quarters growth. Cien will growth with the group but to be blossom, it has to find a big brother to market its technology.

Tlab and Ciena made a big mistake in canceling the deal imo. Also, IMO if they went ahead both should be doing better compared to where they're at now. Now, TLAB at around 1/2 the price of where it was six months ago and even worse for ciena.
It's like when the minister said "kiss the bride" and the groom then notice a slight flaw on the face only then because of the bright light and call off the wedding; time and money lost as well as the guests missed the cake (the stock holders)

IMO, TLAB without ciena (DWDM) will be history in two yrs from now as the old technology legacy TDM and the systems from Coherent will be replaced by much more intelligent ATM/Sonet cross connect with DIrectConnect feature such as Ciena 192 Metro. Look at NET and NN, they're the TDM vendors of the large Enterprises and now their TDM mkt is pretty much gone. The same is going to happen in the other side of the connection, that is the POPs and Exchanges. It's just logical and TLAB knows this and that is why they need the marriage. Lesson in life is that "no bride is picture perfect especially under a bright light".
