Marty,
<<Which of the build to order OEMs (Gateway, Dell, etc.) makes the best portable? >>

I have been very happy with a new Dell Inspiron 266MHz P-II which I purchased for 2300 bucks about 2 months ago. But IBM has just announced a new i-series of Thinkpad that is very very attractive. Check it out at:

pc.ibm.com

By the way, based on my experience, BTO (Build-to-order) doesn't necessarily translate to "configure-to-order". There were several combinations of things I could not get in terms of configuration when I ordered the Dell. Also I believe IBM service is incomparable.

By the way...if you are going to make presentations do not even think of using anything other then the Active matrix screen (which is increasingly becoming standard on many product lines).

Best,
Stitch

Re: Notebook machines

Hello Marty, I just completed the first draft of my collected thoughts on the subject of buying notebook machines.

I just ordered a new machine myself, a Gateway 5150XL. Let me tell you, there is a LOT of CRAP out there. Even after a ton of research, I give the 5150XL even odds I'll be really pissed off at it in a couple of weeks and return the sucker.

Anyway, here's my article:

I guess you might be interested in this too, Mark, although you already bought your iron. You can give me your thoughts though which I'll incorporate.

As far as your specific question about graphics accelerators:

Almost any decent modern machine will be equipped with a tolerable graphics adapter and enough video memory for presentation purposes. The most common these days is the NeoMagic MagicGraph 128 series, which you should do fine by.
