Despite the rollout, HP still has work to do to make its products attractive for SANs (storage area networks).

"They have some backup stuff that's kind of cute, but that's about it," said Tom Lahive, an analyst at Dataquest Inc.'s, Lowell, Mass., office. "When they start doing stuff for the SAN, then it's going to be more exciting."

The Intelligent Storage Server currently works on LANs; future versions will be able to run independently on SANs, although not for at least a year, officials said.

<<There are a few missing ingredients. Users and vendors need a vocal, independent group to negotiate differences and promote the technology. Microsoft needs to bring SAN support to NT. NT won't support SANs until Version 6, at the earliest, which is at least two years away, although some Veritas storage management software is making its way into NT 5.0. Finally, vendors should pay attention to the security threats to widely distributed data stores.>>
