James, sounds like what PCData does...

You can go to pcdata.com and look under "For the Press" to see what the top selling video cards are for each month. 3Dfx has been consistently dominating the ranking since the Voodoo 1.

I think if they released sales figures they'd be held to them by their stockholders. What if they received mistaken information from the retailers? Sounds a bit risky. They're better off letting PC Data do the work (even though most of us can't afford to pay to see the actual tally, just the ranking.)

3Dfx can publish book-to-bill and ship-to-build ratios. This would definitely make them more open than anyone else and resolve issues with customer privacy and legal liability issues. I am not sure how sensitive this kind of information is considered to be.
