Rajala - Mobile is going to nullify WLL penetration in the cities.

I agree that it might because the price differential is not enough to outweigh the sexiness. I was just disagreeing with the assessment that there was no price differential. Just a note - there are at least two factors in favor of WLL:

1) Over regulated markets in most developing countries - we've discussed this before so it is probably not an area of disagreement.

2) Currently many of the wireline phones in the suburbs are owned by 7 or 8 neighbors and perforce must not be moved around too much anyway(sort of like the party-lines that used to exist in the US). This fact combined with a factor of 2 cost savings may be enough to stimulate significant demand.

"Mobile is going to nullify WLL penetration in the cities."

Eh, tried that already. Went back to paying for both landline and mobile.

Several reasons: I can always depend on landline. No dead batteries. Don't have to worry about the theoretical housemate taking the house phone with him. 911-emergency doesn't need to resort to tricks to find me and send help. Friends in town can get my landline number from 411-information and make contact (not even my own cellular provider will give out my mobile number.)

But, the main reason is: I hope my wireless provider can eventually give me one number for all my phone connections.

All this is a moot point if tariffs and other government forces allow WLL to make semi-mobile calls for less money than the mobile providers. Wondering if Mobile hardware is cheaper than WLL (far fewer packaging constraints, ability to build larger RF power into a WLL box, cheaper components.)
