When does the robbery and beating death of someone become front-page headlines? When the victim is a homosexual and the crime occurs in a mostly conservative Republican state. Police say robbery was the main motive. Since the victim was a homosexual, however, the new politically correct definition of hate crime is applied. Media coverage and political reaction to this crime are nothing short of incredible. Even the President of the United States can find time to personally call the victim's family and of course, pledge new federal laws to be enacted. Ask yourself, how many times each day is someone beaten, robbed and killed? In big cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Detroit this is so common it barely rates a column on page D24 of local papers. This story makes page one across the U.S. and warrants the personal intervention of the President. Why? Because the victim was gay! One thing not usually reported is the fact that violence perpetrated by homosexuals upon homosexuals is common. ER physicians in big city hospitals treat the victims of sadomasochism on a daily basis. This goes virtually unnoticed by Bill Clinton and the main stream media. Let two fellows from a rural Republican state like Wyoming commit such a crime, however, and the entire weight of the federal government comes crashing down. Let's quit playing political games with crime! Every state in the Union has laws against assault, robbery and murder. Under our Constitution the venue of law enforcement resides in the states and local communities. The Feds have no Constitutional authority in these matters and Clinton's attempt to nationalize crime is itself criminal! Murder is no less or no more heinous because of the sexual orientation of the victim! Anyone who says otherwise is a political opportunist trying to capitalize upon another person's tragedy to promote his or her own selfish agenda. Watch for people like Patricia Ireland, Jesse Jackson, Hillary Rodham and Morris Dees to begin laying blame for this crime at the door step of the Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family, the Republican majority in Congress, Liberty University, Talk Radio, and of course, right wing militias. The answer they propose will obviously be more intervention and encroachment from Washington D.C. People have been hurting and killing one another since Cain killed Abel. The answer is not more big government programs it is a personal experience with the grace of God through our Lord Jesus Christ. OMB
