Meet Mr. Chau..............................

Growing: Richard Chau
YVONNE CHAN
Richard Chau, DiviCom's Asia-Pacific managing director, could be considered to be in the television business, but don't expect to see him starring in a sitcom.

One of his main duties is to help expand DiviCom's regional business as Asian countries develop digital technologies in television broadcasting.

California-based DiviCom develops and integrates digital video network products, used in direct-to-home, digital cable and terrestrial broadcast technologies.

DiviCom in March established its SAR-based, Asia-Pacific headquarters that "started with myself", said Mr Chau, the first - and for a brief time - only employee. It now employs eight.

Mr Chau joined DiviCom after 10 years with US telecommunications company Sprint, most recently as the general manager of Sprint Global One's Guangzhou office.

The move from telecoms to digital networks was not a big career change, Mr Chau said, after having worked for the telecoms and networking sector of US Sprint and Network Management for several years.

"I come from the telecoms systems side. A lot of DiviCom's customers are telecoms carriers," he said. "For me, that's not a totally different trade. It's very much related."

Technology has long been an interest of Shanghai-born Mr Chau, who spent his early years in Hong Kong and attended school in the US. He holds a master's degree in computer science and an MBA from Averett College in Virginia.

Mr Chau welcomed the SAR Government's recently announced initiative to foster the development of digital TV, a move that could boost sales of Divicom equipment.

"We have been talking with new venture groups to study the physical abilities of digital TV," he said.
