I can't help myself and since Colin was responding to some dialogue I started with him, I'll say this...you've PROVEN MY POINT! You said: WHY on earth would we want everyone to feel oppressed, and force them to make out monthly checks (many people don't even HAVE checking accounts!) subject to even more oppressive penalties if they are late???!!! Because then everyone would be VERY keenly aware of EXACTLY how much money was being extracted from THEIR wallets and taken from THEIR families, retirement and college funds to be redistributed to SOMEONE ELSE for SOMEONE ELSE'S wallet and family. Government is the only body that has a legal authority and monopoly on force to extract property from you. Property you've earned for yourself and your children. Now of course we all have the duty to pay for those services that we benefit from, national defense, roads, police, fire engines, etc. Why then can't charity be left to charitable organizations? If not, then just admit that you're just saying that YOUR cause is better than MINE and you're going to take MY property to give to someone else. Then it's honest. I've strayed, but I'll sum up in this question: Do you know off the top of your head what percent of your gross pay is paid to you net, and what the difference is? Or even better, do you know how much you made net last year after deducting federal income tax, state income tax, local and county real estate tax, and don't forget state sales tax? I doubt it - I know I sure as hell don't. A possible solution presented was to sum these all into one monthly payment you'd make just like your mortgage. You said everyone would "feel oppressed" - huh? Why aren't we NOW then?!!!! Are you suggesting that we aren't now only because we just don't know it because the SAME dollars are TAKEN OUT through automatic withholding or they add a little bit every time we pump gas and buy a pack of gum? How totally ABSURD! JMO dax
