NEW YORK, Oct 21 (Reuters) - U S West Inc. (NYSE:USW - news) , the Denver-based regional Bell phone company, said on Wednesday its third-quarter profits were flat but slightly better than expected despite a two-week strike and investments to build its data and wireless businesses.

U S West posted net income of $379 million or 75 cents a share, compared with the year-ago net income of $380 million or 75 cents a share, which included some one-time items. U S West's profits would have increased 4.1 percent if the year-ago extraordinary items were excluded.

U S West's results exceeded Wall Street's earnings expectations of 74 cents a share, according to First Call, which tracks earnings estimates. Shares of U S West fell 12.5 cents to $56.06 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Baby Bell's revenues increased 5.1 percent to $3.1 billion from $2.9 billion a year ago, with local service revenues up 6.4 percent over last year.

U S West said its third-quarter results were driven by continued double-digit earnings growth in the core communications business. The results were offset by the company's growth initiatives -- wireless PCS (personal communications services), data and video -- which, for now, are dilutive.

''We met our financial commitments for the quarter and we're well positioned to capture new revenue streams in the future,'' said U S West Chief Executive Sol Trujillo.

''Our growth initiatives -- particularly our wireless and data offerings -- have really taken off. Despite a two-week work stoppage, our local revenue growth is steady, and we continue to rapidly build our ATM and IP networks,'' Trujillo said.

U S West said the strike by 35,000 unionized employees in 13 states did hurt U S West's ability to provide new service to customers, but the company has caught up with most of the backlog.

U S West added 584,000 additional access lines over the past 12 months, a normalized growth rate of 3.7 percent. The company said some of the slowdown in this growth rate for the quarter are due to the strike.

Revenues from services increased by nearly 10 percent for the quarter, while revenues from U S WEST's data group, !NTERPRISE, grew 51 percent this quarter to $140 million.

The company's PCS wireless subscribers reached 104,000 during the quarter, while Internet access subscribers exceeded 70,000.

U S West said it expects its high-speed ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) data offering will have about 20,000 to 25,000 customers by year-end, more than double previous projections.
