<OT -McCarthy Era> Speaking of the Pink Lady....A sentence from the book on Nixon's "duel" with Helen Douglas in California best illustrates the mood that I remember:

The mayor of Los Angeles, meanwhile, called
on all citizens to notify the police of any neighbors they considered
politically tainted. "You will do no injustice by reporting all you know," the
mayor explained. "The information conveyed to the police need not be
more than a suspicion."

That sort of thing, eerily reminiscent of you-know-where, spooked many people at the time, even those who were in no way involved in any sort of political activity...You know what happens when neighbor reports on neighbor, after all.
