Hi JP, I'm not directly familiar with BP or Amoco, but read (heard) that the merger will bring the Amoco name back to all the BP stations. That would seem to me to be a good marketing move.

I'll let JzGalt comment on this combo since he's much better in touch with the energy stocks than I am.

Generally you don't want anything in your retirement accounts that could produce unrecoverable losses. The reason is that there's no value to a loss like there is in your personal account (offsetting capital gains).

My personal opinion of energy stocks for the next 10 years is that they are a great place to put money for the long term. I'm continuing to build my energy portfolio. Like lakefront property, we're not making new oil patches all that frequently any more!
