FYI, according to Zacks, TDFX is getting substantial upgrades. The average rating is bettered from 2.5 a week ago, to 1.8 as of 10/19/98 (which for those who don't know, is a strong buy). On another note, I agree with TP that unwinding the short position will be hard. There are not that many sellers left and even though the light volume makes the stock volatile and subject to manipulation, unwinding a large short position without pushing the price too high is still going to be very hard. The 1M share purchase by CL covered a 60% range (8~13). Another such purchase by institution will do the same (i.e 10~16 and settlement ~13-14). The one thing working for shorts is that this is the mutual fund's tax selling season. the shorts (those of whom who understand) are hoping to be able to unwind the position in pieces so that they can keep some profits.
