Top ten reasons not to call:

1. >>These Internet download problems have generated a sharp rise in the number of technical-support calls from end users to Network Associates.<<

2. >>Since September, in online forums in which users of McAfee and Dr. Solomon's antivirus software can vent their frustrations, there have been complaints of long delays to receive telephone support.<<

3. >>I'm so mad at McAfee<<

4. It is a toll call to rub salt in the wound.

5. Let me guess. A voice mail system will probably answer and try to confound me with solving simultaneous quadratic equations to reach the desired customer service line?

6. While on hold I will be told not to hang up because I am a valuable part of somebody's fantasy about how important end users are to the company's visionary mission statement?

7. The customer service rep who answers secretly thinks I am a bozo and he would not be harried by my stupidity if only they did not have so many customers. Don't think so? Do a search on "customer service". There is a whole underground out there of service reps venting their frustration on the Internet about how incredibly stupid their customers are. Very humorous reading while you are on hold.

8. There is a good chance I will get "inadvertently" disconnected and end up angrier than I was. If I do get through, the apology for the long delay in answering the call is due to the unexpected success of the last product introduction; however cannot explain why the order-entry line has no waiting time.

9.>>In fact, only WebScanX 3.1.6 and newer versions are compatible with Windows 98. Unfortunately, Plus! 98 ships with an earlier version of WebScanX<<

10. What are they going to tell me that I don't already know? That their system is SNAFU and they are trying to unscramble the mess?

Seriously though, it is not worth getting worked up about it. Just opened my Symantec Anti-Virus upgrade offer. Hmmm and it's an 800 number and there's no waiting for order entry. McAfee is right not to worry about customers coming back though. Symantec was the reason I bought IBM Anti-virus and again Symantec's purchase of IBM A-V was the reason I bought McAfee. What goes around, comes around. It is only a matter of time before Microsoft comes out with Anti-virus software which is just too easy not to use.
