Craig,
My MII 333 with a diamond viper 550 alows me to play games @800 x 600, 65k. I play incoming with no problem and there is no jerky or cheap cartoon like looks. I also have a K6-2 350 and there is little difference in most games. Support who you like but be closer to accurate when you comment about performance. BTW, Any first person shooter hurts my eyes so I could care less about Quake in any respect, much less saying that a game optimized for Intel's architecture should be the deciding factor for buying a computer for home/business.

Craig,

I have seen those games run on hardware that made them shine, but I don't like the first person shooting games that much. I prefer strategy games (real time and turn based). When they make those games with 3D hardware requirements, I will consider PII, KNI or 3Dnow type CPU.

Here is something bizarre that you may help me explain. Today I got 2 PII based computers delivered. (the small footprint was the main reason for buying them) and I tried my mini-benchmark - a report running through a database and doing some calculations.

THe bizarre thing is that it took 1:20 min for Cyrix M2-233 (188 MHz) based computer, and the same report took 2:18 on Compaq Deskpro EN series with PII-350. The app is 16 bit - DOS.

THe P-II ran under NT, M2 under DOS or Win 95. Both computers are on Fast Ethernet switch, M2 has 3COM 905B, Compaq has a built in Fast Ethernet. The data on the server was all in cache.

I am going to try to boot the Compaq in DOS and try to use the same NIC to see if anything changes. But for now, I feel very penny AND pound foolish for going with PII.

Joe

PS: I also got a 15' NEC flat panel monitor. Although it is supposed to be one of the best analog LCD panels, I was somewhat underwhelmed.
Still too much money for too little quality. But less desk real estate makes it appealing in places where real estate is expensive.
