Do you think those that have that fear are being irrational?

Yes -- to the extent that 1) most "fundamentalist" Christians seem to have no desire to impose their lifestyle on anyone else; and 2) those that DO want to impose that lifestyle on others, at least judging from their rhetoric, are too small in number to succeed.

The best way to eliminate such fears is to address them directly, and to ASSURE the "fearful" that you have no intention of imposing anything on them.

Having said that, I would submit that there are some groups in the population that may have real reason to be fearful. As Michelle has pointed out, this would include gays.

May I suggest that many members of the Religious Right also seem to have irrational fears about attacks on their lifestyle? Here again, I believe these fears should be directly addressed, and not dismissed out of hand.
