Visa is late. DigiCash has been running a pilot with Mark Twain bank for close to 5 years now with electronic cash. It's really pretty cool. It uses strong cryptographic "tokens" whose value is guaranteed by the bank. Problem is, if your hard drive crashes, you lose - just as if you dropped your billfold on the street, or burned your cash.

Now, if Visa could partner with DigiCash and Verifone (now HP, I guess), you'd have a smart card reader on your PC, and you would download cash from the bank over the net, and load it onto your smart card at your desktop.

THAT would be cool - a home ATM. Wonder how CheckFree might turn a buck on something like that ...

Bit.

Five to 10 years is an eternity. This sounds to me like a PR piece in response to the Justice Departments suit levied last week. i.e "see we really are innovative and not stifling competition."
