jbe - thank you for the scholarly historical treatise. Half the fun of these boards is the opportunity to learn. As to the apparent fascination with the events of the era, I actually think it stems from a renewed "we should never forget" movement, which is exemplified in more recent popularist entertainment such as Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

To counter that, there is a publishing segment that revels in the thirst some have for revisionism, specifically turning the criminals into heroes and some of the heroes into villains, and sadly, there is a thriving market for that kind of misinformation.

History education has sunk to depressingly shallow levels.
