Thank you for the compliment, MrK. And I must agree that the above has shrunk to "depressingly shallow levels." You must have seen a report, published not too long ago, detailing the results of an historical quiz administered to high school students nationwide. It made me laugh and cry at the same time.

What is interesting, however, is that movies and TV documentaries are now helping to fill the gap. You mention Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Both fine films -- especially Schindler's List, which I must have seen eight times (I took all my friends visiting from abroad to see it). What stunning black and white photography, by the way!!

And the PBS documentaries, like the one on the American Civil War...And we now have the History Channel..

This is a TV-oriented generation, alas. However, it is nice to see TV serving some useful purpose.
