Thanks for reminding me, the performance of the cable modem and the network providing the service need to be kept separate.

An excellent cable modem on a mediocre or poor network will perform mediocrely (is that a word?) or poorly. Unless engineered, monitored and maintained correctly, cable modem speeds to your computer can degrade quickly as more users are on line, due to the shared nature of the medium and network. If it gets too bad, RoadRunner/Time Warner should split the node to ease congestion. This will free up bandwidth in the area and make your system faster. There should be extra fiber in the area to split the node with no trouble. If designed per corporate guidelines, that is.

Mike - check out the Network Associates web site and glom on to a product they call "Net Medic." I don't know if you can still get it as a standalone product, but It'll give you the ammo you need to determine if it is your ISP or the net.

Mr. K.

Hi Mike, my LANcity/@Home connection is aggravatingly slow of-late also, but it doesn't appear to be their network. There are still only 5 subscribers on my node.

I also have a product called NetMedic by VitalSigns software to monitor the connection, so I know beforehand where the problem lies. Still, I haven't gone an entire month without an outage. They generally fix the problem quickly, and generally volunteer to credit your account, but the reliability is just not there yet.

The most aggravating thing is the @Home customer service wait times. Used to be consistently under a minute; now it's consistently over 20 minutes. On top of that, if you know you need to talk to their level 2 techs, you wait 20 minutes for level 1 to answer and patch you thru to level 2, then another 20 for level 2 to answer. I have a persistent problem with Internet Explorer 4.01 sp1 that they still haven't helped with for nearly a month now. And they all but force you to install the newest version (which really isn't the newest version because it's incompatible with the IE4.01 sp1 that Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 FORCES you to install.
