Just for fun, I did a little research at the Census Bureau.

census.gov

According to them in 1990 USA -

Johnson is the second most common name with 0.810 percent of Americans named Johnson.

Anderson is the eleventh most common name with 0.311 percent of Americans named Anderson.

Hughes is the 88th most common name with 0.092 percent of Americans named Hughes.

Smith is number 1 at a full 1% of Americans ( Probably up to about 4% some Saturday nights ).

Marian Anderson? The extraordinary contralto. What a voice!! And the first Afro-American to perform in the White House. The lead up: the DAR had refused to let her sing in Constitution Hall, so good old Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR and sponsored a concert for Anderson at the Lincoln Memorial. At some point in the 50s, as I recall, Anderson was appointed an alternate delegate to the United Nations...
