Schmidt: Directories Key To Networks, E-commerce

Directories are key to the future of networking because, as a vault of information on individuals, they will set order to the chaos of the Internet, said Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Novell Inc.

"Now that you get online, you can't find anything," he told the crowd gathered to hear his keynote speech at Networld Interop, held here. The content of the Internet has become so vast it is even difficult to find yourself, he said.

But by using directories, such as Novell Directory Services (NDS), businesses can authenticate network users, as well as "establish some sort of digital persona" on their users, whether they be customers or employees, Schmidt said.

With directories, you add the notion of identity, said Schmidt. "If you don't have identities, you can't build an intelligent network."

Implementing directories would add complexity to servers and would let mobile computing become much easier, Schmidt said. By adding this level of intelligence to networks, they can operate more like a public network, a connection people take for granted, he added.

The head of Provo, Utah-based Novell said he thinks networks without directory services would greatly limit the spread of electronic commerce because it is getting more difficult to find things on the Internet.

"We haven't dealt with these issues, but they're coming and they're coming quickly," Schmidt said.

Addressing the issue of privacy, Schmidt said network managers can set limitations in a person's profile so that access to the information will not be widespread.

Fred,

Thanks for your Internet Wave 2 descriptions. It appears that the speed of NDS adoption is accelerating. What I'm hoping to see posted here sometime are some types of projections (purely estimates) on revenues that NDS liscensing deals would produce for Novell over the upcoming year. How would this affect NetWare 5.0 sales, and IntraNetware for smaller businesses? Does anyone out there familiar with this business have any thoughts on the big NDS push by Novell into the networking market as it relates to revenues?

TIA,

QuadK
