A bit of news I came across today..

Mongolia to Produce 10 Tons of
Gold in 1998

Xinhua
29-OCT-98

ULAN BATOR (Oct. 29) XINHUA - Mongolia is expected to produce over 10
tons of gold this year, two years ahead to fulfill the government's exploitation target, a news report said here Thursday.

Under a government plan, gold production is scheduled to reach 10 tons in the year 2000, a senior official of the Agriculture, Livestock Breeding and Industry Ministry was quoted by the newspaper Thursday as saying.

However, in light of the current exploiting speed, the production will be more than 10 tons this year, 17 tons in 2000 and 20 tons in 2001, said the official.

Experts say the reserves of the discovered gold mines in Mongolia would be over 1,300 tons. The country produced 8.9 tons of gold last year, or 48 percent more than that of 1996.

The government has also planned to be among the 20 top gold producers in the world in the 21st century, said the report.
