Mr. Nielsen,

>>If a change in the film for the ZIP is carried out then my expectations would higher quality, lower costs, and a higher profit margin for IOM.<<

I'm sorry, but this argument is ridiculous. I suspect Iomega has been FORCED to look elsewhere for disc media because Fuji is pulling out from the Iomega relationship. You see, Fuji is in bed with Sony in making the HiFD 200MB floppy-compatible disc drive-- the very drive you will soon see in many computers in place of the dedicated floppy drive. Fuji expects to sell A LOT of HiFD media. And they will.

Fuji invented a technology for making disc media called ATOMM. It uses a thin metallic layer over the floppy material to allow greater magnetic concentrations as well as supply a lubricant to prevent read/write head wear. Iomega proved in their own lab tests that "Zip" discs that do not use this ATOMM technology seriously damage Zip drives- and other Zip discs as a result.

Now, Iomega looks like it may be forced to face life without Fuji's ATOMM media, the very technology it was designed exclusively to use.

Its common practice to in the storage business to work with multiple media suppliers. Floppies, tape, CDs all are supplied through multiple channels.

Iomega achieves several powerful advantages by developing Mitsubishi as a second source: 1) Multiple vendors are much better to ensure a constant supply of reliable media 2) a little competition in media helps spur technology improvements 3) pricing is always better when two vendors are present 4) Iomega doesn't have to help the Sony/Fuji product by providing a volume basis for the media

Iomega is doing the right thing by developing a valuable second source. Its just good business. Its also laughable to compare Nomai developed media to media developed by a company with the funding and skills of Mitsubishi chemical.

Also, why would Fuji stop making media for IOM? Where are they going to get their revnue royalties from? The old floppy? It's not like their country's economy is booming that they don't know what to do with all the money coming in, no? They have an installed base of 18 million and growing, that continue to use their product, does anyone think they are that foolish?
