Both. Web enabling an app suite's current screens is something I would expect to get as part of a maintenance fee. That's just the interface that an order entry clerk in Toledo sees when he/she logs into the box in Atlanta. If the vendor doesn't give you that capability for your maintenance fees, go elsewhere. There is no revenue in this for an apps vendor, but they do get to stay around a few more years. Tight integration of an order entry system and an e commerce server offering is an example of an additional offering that involves the web I would expect to pay dearly for. Or a front office suite that enables a purchasor to register their product via the Web and receive information regarding upgrades, recalls, etc. automatically. Or integrating any work performed on the product by third parties (dealers?) with component parts tracking information that gets me all the way back to lot/serial/supplier so I can address component problems with the source, regardless of where the work was performed. I know there is a lot of this out there already, in piece parts, but as a buyer I'd want it in a consolidated app suite and I'll pay additional fees for something that is integrated and supported by the primary apps vendor. I'd expect that if it were bundled in the next generation of some app vendor's product set that they would figure out how to separate enough components and call them optional, that they could realize a significant amount of incremental revenue. Kind of like Oracle's Project Accounting. The fields are in all the tables, but you have to pay extra for the application. I want a Web enabled, web oriented product suite that connects me directly with my customers, and suppliers as a primary way of doing business, not an afterthought, and not via lots of third party bolt ons. It's coming. First to the plate gets to swing the big bat. And the vendors who don't have this stuff get to be the ball. Game starts in early 2000. ttf
