Dear Friends:

On the subject of music, I can't help but believe that the Lord God loves music of many types and that we have great latitude in how we express ourselves musically. The question is whether the music glorifies God or the performer. It should, of course, glorify God. I believe experience teaches that even the great song "Amazing Grace" can be sung for God's glory and, as demonstrated by certain performers, can also be sung for the glory of the singer.

Check out this description of music which glorified God. I dare say that many would shun this short of musical performance in church:

2 Chr 5:12-14
12 All the Levites who were musicians-- Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relatives-- stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets.
13 The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: "He is good; his love endures forever." Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud,
14 and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God.
(NIV)

In Christ, Tom

Hi Grant,

The Lord told us that good trees don't bear bad fruit and vice versa so if someone came to the Lord through Christian Rock am I going to say, "No way, they can't be truly saved because that music doesn't glorify the Lord!?" But was it the music as you suggested that God used to draw them? I think more likely someones testimony or another connection. Like yourself this is not a hobby horse for me.
My difficulties rest with the showmanship i.e. men dressed in attire and makeup more suited to a woman of low moral fibre and a hairdo by hydro electric. With some C.R. bands change the label title and they are no different than most secular heavy metal bands in appearance.
I go to the bible for the answer to the question of whether God condones such things. He says we are to abstain from every appearance of evil and to come out from among them and be separate. So if I were a professional musician that claims to be a Christian that pitches Jesus, do I compromise on His instructions so that I can appease the masses and sell CD's or do I obey God? It wouldn't be a difficult choice if I were truly committed to the Lord.

Not being able to understand lyrics? An infamous individual sums that one up with this quote, "No sense, makes sense." - Charles Manson

By the way, I've enjoyed reading some of your posts where you were doing spiritual combat. How's your Dad doing? No rock climbing I hope.

God bless and keep you.
John

Grant. An observation. THE JESUS FREAK MOVEMENT. Was there. From day one, til the slow strangulation as one after another "minister" changed the life of the medivil monks and nuns more to their own life style. And of course the entertainers took over more and more.

The JESUS FREAK MOVEMENT ended up as ABC specials, etc., and in Time Magazine specials. Look it up only in the real version of history--the Periodical GUide. The net is a lattice work of distorted lies by fools who can program info in HTML. Their actions to increase satanic references into all things of God has left me almost stunned with where it is all going.

The JESUS FREAK MOVEMENT was nearly ALL TEEN-AGE AND EARLY 20's. As were probably most of the spirit filled movements of history. All of the apostles were someone's son, working for the father. We're not actually reading the actions of old men, as the movies portray them. In those days people died at 40. So, we know the guys who first were chosen as "apostles" were at least l/2 of them very young.

During the Jesus Freak movement for almost a full 7 years--69 to 77, actually, maybe even more years, the true spirit filled places were hardly ever accompanied by even one beautiful stringed guitar. Unless there was a person everyone could trust not to take over with a stupid guitar concert.

So much for the fact that anyone under 40 has to have rock entertainment to accomodate their participation in a church service.

OH......by the way. Our accapella prayer meetings for the first 5 years lasted a minumum of 2 to 4 hours.

Food for thought in a starving mind world.
