Freeus, I noticed that IBM jumped back up to #2 also. And I also don't see how that's possible. The thing that scares me about that is, the MM will probably only focus on that. You know how those guys are, all good news but they will find only one thing to bitch about like ASP.

freeus -
IBM also stuffed the channel at the end of '97, so they were also selling out of the channel in 1Q and 2Q 98. This gave Dell a higher apparent share than they really had. The sales and unit growth were real, but the share gains were overstated. Dell did not really beat IBM in 2Q.

But given the continued unit growth Dell will probably get #2 WW in 4Q, and has a shot at #1 in the US in 4Q. They earned #2 US fair and square in 3Q.

It seems like the analysts have finally figured out what happened, since IDC and Dataquest actually explained the problem in this quarter's analysis. If so then it shouldn't hurt Dell's price. It's the trend that matters anyway. As long as people understand what you saw intuitively - Dell has been gaining units faster than anyone else, they couldn't actually have lost share - then Dell should be unaffected.
