Dixon is and WILL BE (because it doesn't exist yet) a mobile chip. If Intel creates a desktop Dixon, it will coin a new name for it. The fact that there is no such name is pretty good indication that Intel won't have a 256k L2-cached competitor to K6-3 on the desktop until AFTER KNI has debuted.

The question is, why? Two reasons:

1) Intel is satisfied that PII will compete just fine against K6-3, for a while at least. Intel is satisfied that PII will have at least a 50 MHz advantage over K6-3 at any given time.

2) Dixon is too expensive for Intel to manufacture for the desktop right now. Intel expects this to change by mid-1999. Only the higher margins on mobile units make 256k on chip cache worthwhile right now for Intel. While I'm sure Intel could make a profit selling Dixon cores for the desktop, it won't because until its costs of production come down, Intel's margins selling Deschutes-core PIIs are better.

It shouldn't be too hard to approximate the Dixon die size.
The Pentium II w/o cache is 131mm2
The Celeron A w/128k cache is 154mm2
The 128k takes up 23mm2 of real estate but that 23mm2 has a cache controller in it I think. Subtract that out of the 23mm2 and add the result on top of the 154mm2 and that should be close to the Dixon, everything else being equal.
If the cache controller is say 10mm2 then the Dixon should be somewhere around 167mm2 but maybe someone can give a better approximation of the controller size...
