Well, an asterix shows a dropped packet to be correct. On loaded links/routers ICMP (ping) and ICMP_REPLIES (ping reply) get lowest priority and are first to be dropped. Since traceroute uses ICMP (among other things) you sometimes see asterix. Anyhow it's the best tool the average user has to troubleshoot a link between you and a target. Hop 12 in your traceroute was unacceptible, imho. 900ms and Sprint --- Too common of an occurance.
