(CT) Lucent, BellSouth To Test ADSL At University Of Miami
10/26/98 19:14

The University of Miami, BellSouth [BLS] of Atlanta and Lucent
Technologies [LU] of Murray Hill, N.J., announced at Networld +
Interop in Atlanta that they are planning a six-month trial of
asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) technology at the
University of Miami.
The trial will begin in December, taking place at the University
of Miami's Coral Gables campus. BellSouth's network will be used to
provide the ADSL service, along with Lucent ADSL equipment. The trial will focus on the interoperability of different vendors' ADSL
equipment with Lucent's 5ESS AnyMedia Switches.

The goal is to provide "plug-and-play" installation of ADSL
modems for end users, thus eliminating the time and expense associated
with third-party installations.
The trial will have three phases; each of which will provide an
opportunity to test different levels of ADSL service and a variety of
ADSL equipment. The first phase will focus on full-rate ADSL, which
delivers up to 8 Mbps of bandwidth to the user. The second and third
phases will focus on mass-market ADSL, or "ADSL Lite," which delivers
speeds up to 1.5 Mbps and targets consumer and small business users.
"In the near future, an educational environment must not be
limited to the campus infrastructure," said Lewis Temares, vice
president of information technology at the University of Miami.
"Virtual private networks will link students, on and off campus, to
university data resources and corporate resources, as well as the
Internet. Students will be able to participate in 'virtual
classrooms' across the world. This trial puts the University of Miami
-- and more importantly, our students -- at the forefront of reaping
the benefits of the information revolution."
The trial will test the interoperability of a number of vendors'
external and internal modems with BellSouth's network and Lucent's
5ESS switches. Modems supplied by 3Com Corp. [COMS] of Santa Clara,
Calif., will be the first to be tested. (Doug Broad, Lucent
Technologies, 908-559-7520.)

Does Orckit have something going on w/ Lucent Microelectronics? or is it just in Europe? or am I'm getting confused w/ another company?

Hi s, the only info I have on the HDSL in S. America is that they sold some small amounts to an unnamed customer. Orckit will be in Brazil early November for Expo Comm Brazil, maybe we will get a press release or something then.
