AsiaSat(NYSE:SAT) is soaring on takeover speculation. SPOT is the prime suspect. SAT would be a good catch--excellent company, well run, etc.--wish Loral would have picked it up. ATS(Apstar) is still there though, ripe for the picking. They have 3 sats, including Apstar IIR, a Loral built bird. As for the rest of the Asian satellite assets, it is difficult to make a case for anyone successfully making their way through all the twisted ownership and country specific rules. Loral does already own 16 Ku-band transponders on Agila II, with 6 of those inactive because of a dispute with Superbird of Japan(they are celestial neighbors). Remember too that Orion agreed long ago to sell 8 Ku-band transponders on Orion 3 to Dacom for $89 million. Dacom was going to use these for DBS in cahoots with Rupert Murdoch. Well, the Korean government said go ahead as long as you use KoreaSat 3 for your broadcasts by the year 2000. Thus, it would appear that the cash-strapped Dacom would back out of the deal. That gives Orion 43 transponders instead of 35--a good deal I think. Orion should be able to utilize these in a manner that produces much more revenue and earnings than the one-time Dacom payment.
