Pearly Button - Re: " I am also interested in your view on the pluses/minuses of the K6-2 vs Celeron. Briefly stated from a technical point of view. "

I will assume a Mendocino Celeron for this discussion.

1. Celeron has a slower FSB - 66 MHz vs. 95 or 100 MHz for the K6-2.
However, the only advantage of the faster FSB is for L2 cache access. For the K6-2, this will be 95 or 100 MHz. BUT, the Celeron has an on-chip L2 cache - which will run at 300 or 333 MHz !

ADVANTAGE - Celeron.

2. K6-2 supports larger L2 caches - 512K or 1 Meg. Celeron has a fixed 128 K.

Advantage K6-2.

3. For a few games, K6-2 offers 3DNOW. If you are a gamer and the specific games you like support 3DNOW, the K6-2 may overcome the cache disdvantage it has and equal or outperform the Celeron. However, a serious gamer with a VooDoo 2 card may achieve better performance on the Celeron.

Advantage - questionable. Depends on the game and graphics card.

4. Business/engineering applications - Celeron's FAST pipelined FPU will be as much as 2x faster than a K6-2. If you use a lot of business applications - spreadsheets, databases, graphics (not games), the Celeron will be much better.

Advantage - Celeron.

As for the book, that looks like a good introduction and if it goes into DETAILs about the K6-2 microarchitecture - not just a few block diagrams - then it may worth $44.
